Top Veterinary Technician Schools in Nevada

Anyone who enjoys working with animals and doesn’t want a boring nine-to-five job should check into an exciting, fun, and rewarding career as a veterinary technician. Vet techs may find themselves working with everything from small house pets to exotics, both large and small. Here, then, is some information to help get you started on your new career path:

Find Accredited Veterinary Technician Schools in Nevada

There are only three American Veterinary Medical Association accredited college programs in the state of Nevada. These are located in Carson City, Las Vegas, and Reno. They offer both associates and bachelor degrees and take two – four years to complete, depending on which degree you are aiming for. Stringent guidelines are in place by the AMVA to assure a top-quality education. For those unable to attend regular classes, there are many on-line courses offered. A word of warning – make sure these courses are AMVA certified before wasting time and money on them. If you choose this option, hands-on training as part of the education process can often be found at a local veterinary office where you will be under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian. Some zoos use techs-in-training also.

How to get Certified in Nevada

To become licensed to practice your skills, you must take and pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam upon completion of your chosen degree. This exam requires approximately four hours to complete and covers the areas of laboratory procedures, pharmacology, and surgical preparation, among others. There are refresher courses and tutorials available to help in passing this exam.

Salaries for Veterinary Technicians in Nevada

On average, a vet tech can expect to earn in the neighborhood of $22,000.00 – $25,000.00 annually, or roughly $10.00 – $15.00 per hour. Of course, this depends largely on where the tech chooses to work. Besides a veterinary office, many farms and ranches use vet techs. Some casinos who have on-site animals use the services of vet techs as well. Anywhere animals are located is an opportunity! There are currently approximately 520 working vet techs in the state of Nevada. However, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is projecting a higher growth rate in this field than many other occupations; 30% between 2012 – 2022. This definitely rates as one of the more stable of career fields. The work is non-seasonal and, once licensed, you may practice anywhere in the state of Nevada.
