How to get Certified in Philadelphia

Harcum College: Bryn Mawr, PA

Located in Bryn Mawr, PA, Harcum College is known as the “college of possibilities.”

They have a student/teacher ratio of 11 to 1, so the faculty get to know each and every student.

The vet program offered by Harcum College is their Veterinary Nursing (Technology) program. This is a six-semester (or three year) program.

It will prepare students to enter a career as a veterinary nurse in private veterinary practice, zoo/wildlife medicine, biomedical research, pharmaceutical sales, teaching, humane societies, raising livestock, or anything where the health of animals is concerned.

As for hands-on experience, students in the vet program at Harcum College will receive that at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. 

This program is accredited by the AVMA, and graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). Upon completion of six months of employment in a lab setting, you are eligible to sit for the the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science exam.

To apply for this program, you need: 

  • Completed Harcum College application
  • Official copy of high school transcript or GED transcript. This is waived if you have a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Official copies of all college transcripts, if applicable
  • Completion of Algebra I and II, Biology, and Chemistry with a grade of C or better. College courses may be substituted.
  • Minimum combined SAT score of 900 (critical reading and math scores) or composite score of 19 on the ACT. A college cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better may be substituted.
  • Letter of recommendation from employer, teacher, guidance, counselor, etc.
  • Typed personal essay describing, in your own words, what a vet tech does and what led you to this career path
  • If English is your second language, these tests of English proficiency are accepted: TOEFL: 61, IELTS: 5.5, DET: 28
  • You may be required to take Harcum placement tests in English, math, and/or reading

Johnson College: Scranton, PA
